How Do We Love Jesus and Mean It?
The Bible is clear on the way believers can best show our love for Jesus. First, the love Christians have for Jesus should be different than what we typically call love today. In the Bible, love is viewed as a selfless and giving love, the kind that Jesus showed the world by voluntarily dying for it. When we say "I love Jesus," we don't mean that He's our friend or romantic interest. So, what does it mean when someone says "I love Jesus"?
Jesus gave us the way to love Him in His own words! He said that if we love Him, we will follow His commands. In other words, it isn't enough to speak words of love. Rather, we must do what He asks of us, which is clearly more difficult. His commands are best enshrined in the Beatitudes and the Ten Commandments. For example, if we say we love Jesus, then we go out and steal from our neighbor, that isn't really love.
Thus, it's much easier to say "I love Jesus," or put it on a bumper sticker, than to actually follow Him. Nonetheless, the biblical understanding of love is clear: love is following Jesus.
