A Community Church

What is a Local Community Church?

community churchOften, a local church or parish is called a community church. In the past, it was common for a town or locality to have one church, which served as a gathering place for the entire community. In this way, the local church was kind of like a local town hall, where the community gathered to worship, discuss community affairs, and generally socialize. In some places that are religiously homogeneous, this is still the case. However, in most cities and towns, many community churches dot the landscape.

Some churches have the name "community church" in their name, which is often because in the past, when the citizens of a town shared the same religion, that church literally was the church of the community. In the postmodern world, very rarely is a local parish a true community church.
