Feast of Saint James, Son of Zebedee Prayer

For July 25 or Any Occasion

There are many individuals named "James" in the New Testament. The apostle James, Son of Zebedee, was the brother of the Apostle John, and also called "James the Greater." He and his brother earned the nickname "sons of thunder." Along with Peter and John, he was a part of the "inner circle" of Jesus' apostles. He was martyred around AD 44 by King Herod, briefly mentioned in Acts 12:1-2.

He is the patron saint of Spain, and his remains are said to be at Santiago de Compostela. The pilgrimage to visit his remains is one of the most popular in all of Europe. His feast is celebrated on July 25. The image is a portrayal of Saint James in a painting by Rembrandt.

Prayer For The Feast of Saint James The Apostle

O gracious God,

We remember before You today Your servant and apostle James,

First among the twelve to suffer martyrdom for the name of Jesus Christ;

And we pray that You will pour out upon the leaders of Your Church that spirit of self-denying service

By which alone they may have true authority among Your people;

Through Jesus Christ, our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit,

One God, now and for ever.

Amen.
